Up and running since April 11, 1916, Exeter Mercantile is a general store serving the community of Exeter, California, a small town nestled in the Central Valley of the Golden State. In 1919, after setting his feet back on American soil after soldiering through World War I, Sidney Schelling Sr. secured the store from the original owners. Now his sons Bob and Sid, along with their sister Elizabeth, and Bob's son Brian have kept the family owned business going for 100 years.
Exeter Mercantile, or the mercantile, as customers lovingly refer to it, offers everything except milk and eggs. From fine china, gifts, housewares, and small appliances on one side of the building, a hardware, paint, and parts department spanning the middle, and tractors and Kawasaki Mules on the other side of the building, with a full service shop in the back.
Customers from all around the Tulare County area come in to shop, or exchange a laugh or two with the associates, and some come to grab one of our free bags of popcorn. Whatever your reason for stopping into Exeter Mercantile, you're always welcome, and always a part of our ever growing family.
